May's Artiste of the Month features Nicodemus of "Mi Lu Bing"! He was the winner of the 2007 talent-spotting band competition SuperBand and he also won Best Newcomer Award at the Singapore Hit Awards 2007!

Question: Hello Nicodemus! Can you tell us more about yourself?
Nicodemus:
I'm 24 years old, currently serving my National Service in SAF MDC. My rank is Lance Corporal.

Q: How do you play a part in MDC?
Nic:
I'm a performing artiste. I sizzle up the dance floor as well as stretch my vocal chords from time to time.

Q: How did you get involved with music and subsequently think of joining MDC?
Nic:
I took up a diploma in audio engineering before moving into the performing line. Armed with a diploma in the relevant field and experience, I joined the SAF MDC.

Q: How has MDC helped you in becoming a better musician?
Nic:
MDC's has taught me how to express myself better and attain a much better stage presence. Before, I used to 'hide' behind my instrument (guitar) whenever I perform, perhaps due to a little lack of confidence on my part. But MDC taught me how to fully express myself with the mic.

I've also picked up a very important fact of life while serving my NS here. 'Learn to be humble and earn your respect through merit'. You might be a artiste in civilian life, but here in the army, everybody's the same. There're no 'big shots' or superiors amongst peers.

Q: Being an Artiste looks like a glamorous life. Surely everyday's a breeze here?
Nic:
Haha, that's far from true. When tight schedules kick in, life can get pretty tiring. Behind the glitz lie many, many hours of hard work and practise. Lots of times I find myself having to forsake my precious Saturdays and Sundays to stay and do rehearsals.

Sure, we go on stage with smiles on our faces. But that is garnered from the satisfaction of finally performing what you've practised, and sheer professionalism. Things never appear as they seem.

Q: What do you intend to do after you are Operationally Ready and leave MDC?
Nic:
My life resolves around music, so I would like a job that is related to music. It doesn't have to be performance related. I'd be happy any time with a career in music production or support.

Q: Enough about music! Tell us what you do in your free time!
Nic:
Well... Actually I spend lots of spare time surfing the net and doing research on the latest musical advancements, checking out the newest of sound technology and basically reading up on anything related to music. Guess I'm quite passionate about music! Or should I say crazy? Haha!

Q: Since this is the first issue of Artiste of the Month, please tell us what a regular day for you here at MDC is like!
Nic:
Sure it goes something like this;

0915 to 0930 - arrive for roll call
0930 to 1000 - warm up & dexterity exercises
1000 to 1230 - rehearsals for new repertoire item (or dance classes)
1230 to 1315 - lunch
1315 to 1730 - rehearsals for current repertoire items

Q: Thanks so much for your time Nicodemus! Great to share a moment with you. Any words of advice to anyone looking to join MDC?
Nic:
No problem! I'd like to say, think carefully if you wish to consider MDC. If it's not for the passion of performing or music, forget about it. Other vocations would be much better. I've seen people come and request to get posted out almost immediately, just because they feel that having to dance is suffering. In MDC, all singers have to pick up dance!

ivan:

Recently a friend of mine shared his problems to me..i find his situation much similar to the one sam blogged..so i decide to post the story sam has blogged few days back over here too..

sam:

I was at the hospital almost the whole day, visited a friend who's unwell. Before i left the ward at night,an old lady in her 80s was brought in to rest on the bed directly opposite my friend. This auntie was accompanied by her younger brother who was almost as old as her. As auntie had difficuties with movements and speech, her brother spoke to the nurse on her behalf. Unfortunately, the foreign nurse couldn't speak dialet and uncle hardly understood english. I then went up and volunteered to help with simple transaction. Uncle couldn't answer many of the nurse's questions. For example, any drug allergy? When asked for a Next-of-Kin contact, uncle took out his handphone and searched for his own handphone number..The nurse asked for a second NOK contact, uncle replied at that time he's the only one and he'll definitely pick up his phone. I learnt that this pair of siblings lived together, their next kin was a niece who was not contactable at that time. Uncle also told me to ask the nurse if they could have financial assistance with the hospital fee..When the discussion was over, uncle walked over to auntie who was still lying on her bed, stroked her forehead and said to her that he's leaving and will be back the next day to visit her. She replied a very soft "Orh" and watched him leave. From that time till i left, i looked at auntie. She stared blankly at nothing, helpless and lonely. I tried speaking to her a little of cantonese, asking her whether she was uncomfortable, telling her to sleep early and have a good rest, trying to cheer her up. I didn't know what she was trying to reply. Then before i left the ward,i went up to auntie again, gave her a wide braces smile and say goodbye. I felt sad.. not like really upset till cry,but just sad to witness this happening. Maybe it's not as bad as i think, but this is reality.

I dont have a moral of the story, because this is not a story.

I hope all of us will stay healthy and away from hospital/clinic,take care people..

New Guitar

Hi people ! Here I am blogging again..

I wanna type a long post initially..but busying for the next few weeks..so gotta type about other topics first..will post the long one some other day when my schedule is free and easy/when i have the time...

Took day off on friday to shop with my bestie and buddy for new guitar at penisula..got myself a new guitar! Though it's the cheap cheap type which cost about 90 bucks and is a classical guitar, but still I'm content with it..after all,I guess that guitar may marks a new beginning for me..a new goal in my life..I don't mind starting everything from scratch..cos' everything has to start from scratch intially..just like building a structure..you have to start from the bottom..you can't just start right from the top..the same goes with life..if we want something,we have to start from the bottom..I remember my role model(for those who know) said this somewhere before..He said that "Anything that we archieved in life came from hardwork." And I find it quite true..without hardwork and effort,we won't be able to get what we wants...

Fyi,I have taken a pic of my new guitar..no time to transfer to my notebook yet due to my camp schedule..will try to upload on this post soon...

See ya guys !
